The Sant Miquel Castle
of Escornalbou dates from the late 12th to the early 13th century.
Alfons I commissioned its construction, and gave it to the church
of Tarragona. Augustinian monks lived in the castle, centre of a great
barony, and in the church of Sant Miquel. From 1580 to 1835, when
confiscation law was established, the Franciscan order took it over.
In 1843 John Bridgam took possesion of the castle and, in the first
decade of 20th century Eduard Toda rebuilt and restored it.
He managed to bring together interesting collections of engravings,
ceramics and many other kinds of objects, such a distinguished library.
The most outstanding features of all are the Romanesque church,
the remains of the chapterhouse and the cloister, as well as Eduard
Toda's residence, meticulously restored. A tour will give us an
idea of what a stately house from early 20th century looked like.
From the cloister arches and, specially from the Santa Barbara hermitage,
located on the top, one can enjoy one of the best views of the region
of Tarragona.
