The old hermitage,
dedicated to Siant Bartomeu, dates from XII century. It was romanesque,
despite the fact that it is said that the hermitage has a no clearly-defined
style. Unfortunately, it collapsed in 1903 and it was rebuilt in an
Art Nouveau style, a bit shocking but following the style of that
period.
Once the new sanctuary was built, la Mare de Déu de la Riera
was reintegrated (Desember 8, 1904).
The original plans of the hermitage disappeared and by now, noone
has found any oficial document that reveals its architect's name.
At the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), as the Republican
army retreated, the hermitage was blown up, together with its arsenal
of weapons and amunitions, which were stored there. Its reconstruction
was carried out in1954, trying to be true as much as possible to
the original.
In 1981, an external factor led that the worshipped image of the
Mare de Déu de la Riera had to be transfered (so as to be
guarded and protected) and kept indefinitely at the church in town.
The sanctuary is situated about 700 meters west from town, 255
meters hight and it is accessible on a nice walk.
