Leave Cambrils by road, taking the T-312 in the direction of the
Parc Samà for 4.3 km (just under 3 miles), then stop off
to visit the park. Discovering its 14,000m2 (3_acres) is like entering
a dreamland, starting with the colonial mansion surrounded by its
exquisitely-designed gardens, bursting with botanical variety.
The lake, with its canal and waterfall, is perhaps the most attractive
piece in the park. There are three islands, connected by bridges.
On the middle island there is a highly picturesque mountain built
of large rocks, inside which there is a grotto with a landing.
At the corner of the estate, next to the site of the zoo – which
still has peacocks in it-is an ornamental watchtower. Take time
to enjoy these picturesque surroundings with a distinctly colonial
flavor.
Carry on along the same road as far as the old castle-monastery
of Escornalbou, beneath the hilltop of Santa Bàrbara,
passing through Montbrió del Camp and Riudecanyes. From
the arched cloister and above all from the chapel of Santa Bàrbara,
situated at the highest point, you can enjoy one of the finest
views in the Tarragona region. Do not forget to enjoy a stroll
through the woods along the Camí dels Fares (friars’ path).
Continue along the local road to L’Argentera, settled
by the Romans because of its deposits of galena (lead sulphide,
a source of lead and silver). A stroll through its carefully-restored
streets is very pleasant, especially the street along which the
former Camí Reial runs.
Head on to Duesaigües by the T-313. Here you can admire
the two fine stone railway bridges, built in 1893 to cross over
its two streams, one of 14 arches and the other of 9. The Els
Masos viaduct is the longest, and is listed as part of Catalonia’s
industrial heritage.
Make a detour to Riudecanyes, where you should visit the reservoir,
built at the start of the 20th century. Today it supplies water
to all the villages on the plain.
Leave Duesaigües on the T-313
in the direction of Montbrió del Camp. Here, take the T-312
to Cambrils, a pleasant fishing port renowned for its excellent
seafood restaurants. In Cambrils we recommend a visit to the Sanctuary
church of the Mare de Déu del Camí, especially its
17th –century watchtower, which houses a museum. This tower,
which guarded the old royal road, still has its interior layout
with spiral staircases. In its rooms you can visit an exhibition
about Cambrils in the middle ages.
Go on next to the Port of Cambrils. We recommend a stroll around
the old fishing port, visiting the fish market and the area where
the nets are spread out to dry.
From here you should take a cruise on the Dorimar II – a
boat belonging to the company Creuers Costa Daurada – to
enjoy a charming sea trip along the coast, with views of the different
beaches, El Regueral, La Llosa, Mont-roig and La Rifa, as far as
l’Hospitalet de l’Infant. If you wish you can try delicious
seafood paella with sangria and dessert. Alternatively, you can
visit L’Hospitalet and dine at one of its restaurants, as
you have three or four hours to spare.
